I happened to stumble upon an article about an blind Irish man who had his site restored by some amazing English doctors. However, this apparently was no ordinary procedure, oh no. The man’s sight was restored not with a camera, not by restoring tissue, and not by other technological methods, but by rather by having a fucking tooth shoved into his eye. Here’s an excerpt from the article:
"The technique, pioneered in Italy in the 1960s, involves creating a support for an artificial cornea from the patient’s own tooth and the surrounding bone.
The procedure used on McNichol involved his son Robert, 23, donating a tooth, its root and part of the jaw.
McNichol’s right eye socket was rebuilt, part of the tooth inserted and a lens inserted in a hole drilled in the tooth."
That’s pretty amazing I must say, but there’s something I’ve uncovered that’s even more intriguing. Rumor has it that Apple is getting in the action and releasing its own version of this, only its a bit more technically advanced. The story on Yahoo is indeed real, however I made up the whole iTooth thing from Apple.
